Nick’s Friday Round-Up: Something for Everyone Edition

Hmmm, yes. Quite right, quite right.
Welcome to the end of this week. I'm glad you've arrived. Please have a seat and enjoy the article. Feel free to have a refreshment and tasty beverage.
Speaking of refreshments, let's take a look at the difference between fast food as it's advertised, and the actual food you purchase. [geekologie]
Tired of having to eat around those annoying leaves on the top of a strawberry? Do you get frustrated trying to fold a fitted sheet? Want to amplify the volume of your iPod speaker? How about making heart-shaped hard-boiled eggs? Here are 25 clever ideas to make life easier. [thedailybuzz]
While we're on a DIY theme, how about a few more geek-style DIY projects. Create your own stylus for an iPad. An easy and efficient way to organize all your extra cables, and a dirt cheap way to extend the range of your routers wi-fi antennae. [howtogeek]
Space... the final frontier. TV and movies would never lie to us about space, right? When it comes to black holes, and yellow suns, and asteroid belts, we all have our facts straight. DON'T GO NEAR THEM! Or can we? Here are 6 myths everyone believes about space, thanks to movies. [cracked]

Here are a few legitimately newsworthy links:
No Blizzcon in 2012 [geekosystem]
If Fringe is canceled it could continue on through another medium [blastr]
Microsoft could be phasing out Microsoft Points by the end of 2012 [geekosystem]
Ever played Duck Hunt and just wanted to go at it with a machine gun? (sidenote: I wanted to shoot the living brains out of that laughing dog.) Well, sorry, you can't do that, BUT, you can watch a video of Bill "Mad Dog" Rizer from Contra do it, as well as a bunch of other video-game mash-ups. [youtube]
Who didn't play the original Command and Conquer? Anybody? Anybody at all? Good. Well why not take yourself back to the 90s and play it again, but this time in your browser. A guy by the name of Aditya Ravi Shankar (don't ask me to pronounce it) took it upon himself to recode the entire C&C game as an html5 game. It's not finished, but you can still play it in it's current state. [howtogeek]

Two words. Dubstep Cat. Watch this video all the way through. I promise you will thank me for it. For those of you who need instant gratification, jump to the 34 second mark. [youtube] (I just watched it again... omg, I'm crying. hahaha)
If going to ThinkGeek.com isn't enough to fulfill your nerdy desires of awesomazing things, then check out this website. [needwant]
Want to be one of the original Power Rangers? HECK YEAH, YA DO! Well now you can, with these new Power Ranger hoodies! Now you can play Power Rangers outside with 37% less imagination. [geekologie]
Hyrule Kingdom. A place of wonder and excitement. A place where a little fairy follows you around, annoying the life out of you. If you can't get enough of this world in the actual video games, then why not role-play inside the Hyrule Kingdom in Minecraft? [gammasquad]
OMG, ADORBZ OF THE DAY: A baby reacts to hearing a new sound. [buzzfeed]
On a final note, you should all go to Lisa's Facebook, or tweet her @LisaFoiles, and tell her Thank you, and how much you appreciate her. There are a few different writers for this website, but without Lisa, none of us would be able to entertain you, throughout the week, here on Save Point. She personally pays for the hosting of this website herself, and cares about getting information out to all of you and making you all laugh, whether it's through us, or doing it herself. So go tell her thank you. Tell her how much you appreciate her. Tell her how much she entertained you as a kid, on All That. Tell her your favorite, All That, character of hers. Tell her how much you enjoyed watching her take one for the team in a chili bath. She did it all for you guys, to make you laugh. She's an amazing person and she deserves to know that all her work and effort is very much appreciated.

Hah. Picture looks like the best game of Clue evah.

Thank you Lisa, for everything, but especially the not succumbing to the temptation to turn the effort from Save Point into a giant homicidal robot that shoots even more homicidal laser cats from it’s mouth which are both cats that are made from and shoot deadly lasers themselves.

At first I read that as “scumbagging”. I was like… “that doesn’t make any sense.” haha
January 28th, 2012 - 00:13
Thank you Lisa, for keeping this whacky site around so I can have some fun and games with the articles.

What? No more Fringe? Impossible!
Ah well, tv shows may come and go, but Save Point is forever. You guys rock!
January 28th, 2012 - 01:52
Lisa, you know how much I appreciate you. Well, not entirely, but you know well enough my friend.
January 28th, 2012 - 16:54
I would suggest we all throw a Foiles Appreciation Party, but I worry we may have to think about the name. The acronym might give the wrong idea.
January 28th, 2012 - 13:56
Fringe is like the best gorram sci-fi on TV right now. Chuck’s officially gone. House and Supernatural look like they might be on their final seasons. Yeah I need a couple of new shows.
I’m surprised “there is sound in space” is not on Cracked’s list. Was really expecting that one after all the Star Wars movies.
And yes I will go ahead and send Lisa a Twitter tweet and Facebook face (as soon as she accepts my friend request).

Oh man, looking at the original C&C in a browser has ignited a flame within me that hasn’t existed in years. I honestly hate what EA has done to the C&C franchise after Tiberian Sun, essentially destroying it completely in terms of fiction and game play.
Damn it, Nick… :(

I happen to really like Red Alert 2 and adore Yuri’s Revenge. One of my favorite RTS, if not favorite games, ever.
January 29th, 2012 - 04:00
This a thousand times. I would play random skirmishes vs. AIs for hours back in the day. The korean jets were awesome.
Also, dem superweapons :O
January 29th, 2012 - 04:53
I will concede that RA2 and Yuri’s Revenge are fun games. My ‘beef’ (if that is what you would call it) with RA2 + YR is that from a storyline perspective, taking into consideration the fiction of the series prior, it makes absolutely no sense. Westwood/EA was aiming for a cheesy B-Movie feel and they succeeded; at the cost of ignoring either ending of the original RA of course.
I’m one of those ‘canonical nuts’ who hates inconsistencies with a franchise I once held dear. C&C3 really fanned the flames and served as proof that those working on it had no idea or intention of doing the series justice.
For starters, changing the basic form and characteristic of Tiberium from a flora-based life form (if you could call it that) which produced the crystals as a by-product of excess materials it extracted, into a pure crystalline substance that transformed anything and EVERYTHING into more “Tiberium” by mere touch or inhalation of microscopic particles, was and still is nothing short of absolutely stupid.
Add to the fact that EA’s so called ‘GDI Zone Troopers’ – soldiers specially trained to combat heavy Tiberium infested areas – originally contained no form of breathing apparatus or protection (you know, because you’ll turn into more Tiberium if you breathe in just a small particle according to EA’s own fiction) and what you have is a company who never cared for the work Westwood put into the franchise and instead wanted to milk it for all that it was worth.
The less said about C&C4 the better.
In hindsight, Generals was probably the best C&C game EA ever made. It didn’t play like a traditional C&C game but at least EA didn’t completely bugger up the entire franchise storyline. Who knows, maybe Generals 2 might be decent.
Wait, did I just write a ridiculously long post about the fiction and story of a real time strategy game? Damn, I need to get out more…

The fast food article makes me think of that movie “Falling Down”. “Mortal Kombat vs Oklahoma” and “Contra vs Paperboy” were hilarious.
Thanks for this awesome website and all the laughs Lisa, your the best.
